The Conference of Presidents of Major American Organizations today sent a message to President John F. Kennedy expressing “deep concern over the preliminary position of the United States Government in the current discussions in the United Nations regarding the Syrian-Israel dispute.”
“That position,” the message said, “implies that the United States is more critical of Israel’s response to Syrian provocation than it is to the aggressive action by Syria. Should this position be reflected in action by the Security Council, we believe this may have dangerous repercussions by encouraging the Syrians to continue their aggressive action against Israel. In our judgment, the recent incidents on the Sea of Galilee are part of a chain of events resulting from Syria’s continuous provocation, military pressures and terrorism on Israel’s frontiers.”
(In Washington, Congressman Emanuel Caller of New York visited the White House today and conferred with President Kennedy on the attitude of the American delegation at the United Nations in the Israel-Syrian conflict now before the Security Council.)
