“Assimilation and complete estrangement from the Jewish fold is threatening the very foundations of Jewish life in the United States in the next few generations,” Dr. Emanuel Neumann, member of the Jewish Agency executive told the convention of the Histadruth Ivrith held here.
Dr. Neumann said that the only way to give our Jewish youth the tools with which to fight the battle of assimilation is to “revolutionize our ideas and approach, and open a new chapter.” Such a task can not be done “without the spread of the Hebrew language and literature,” he stated.
Expressing the view that the “Hebrew language and literature are a priceless possession and the American Jew’s strongest tie with our great cultural heritage,” Dr. Neumann called for the establishment of a great cultural foundation. In his opinion, the Histadruth Ivrith should serve as the nucleus of such a new effort.
