Eleven Jewish medical students who were threatened with exclusion from state examinations were finally admitted as the result of intervention on the part of Senator Sigmund Birman, president of the Jewish community of Bucharest.

While in former instances Christian students threatened not to take examinations at the same time they were given for Jewish students, the Christian students this time said they would keep Jews from the tests, by force, if necessary.

The principal reason advanced to justify is the charge that non-Jews are not permitted to establish connections with Jewish institutions. It has been shown, however, that the statutes of the Jewish hospital contain no confessional restrictions and were approved by the authorities. Professor Hortolomei, chief of the surgical department, is a non-Jew, as is the chief midwife. Moreover, statistics show that during its first year the new Jewish hospital treated 287 non-Jews of a total of 681 patients and gave them 4,545 consultations of a total of 11,930.
