Why are these proceedings taken against only Codreanu and his friends, because of acts and ideas shared by most of the Roumanian youth, including the advocates, Advocates Garneatza, Rioci, and Georgescu, who are appearing for the defence, asked when the trial was continued to-day.
Professor Antonescu, a well known jurist who has not been known as sympathetic to the antisemitic movement, appealed to the court to-day for an acquittal, urging that the accused are idealists, and should therefore be given exceptional treatment. Referring to the charge against them that they wore uniform and regarded themselves as a militarist organisation, he said that the members of the Jewish Sports Organisation, Maccabee, also wear uniforms. He had nothing against these Jews working for the renaissance of the Jewish nation and he could not understand why Roumanians should be prosecuted for wanting to do the same thing for the Roumanian nation. Professor Antonescu complained of the activities of the Jewish Press abroad, which is spreading alarm without any real reason, he said.
On leaving the court, Professor Antonescu was cheered by a crowd of students, but a number of other people attending the trial eanted to know how it was that a reputed sympathiser with the Jews should come to defend Codreanu.
The trial has been adjourned till next week, when the verdict will be announced.
