The Jewish Martyrs Memorial in front of the Great Synagogue here was found defaced with red paint today for the second time this month. Authorities and spiritual leaders of the various churches in Geneva denounced “this shameful act” and Chief Rabbi Alexander Safran expressed deep consternation.
There was some belief that the incident might be connected with cancellation of a poetry recital dedicated to Robert Brassilac, a World War II French collaborator and anti-Semite, who was executed after France was liberated, and with the confiscation of an anti-Semitic book published several weeks ago in Vevey.
