Paolo Enrico Salem, a Jew, resigned today as mayor of Trieste. His action was believed the result of pressure related to the newly-proclaimed racial doctrine. Francesco Marucci, vice-Mayor, was named to succeed him.

The order barring foreign Jewish students from Italian schools and universities also applies to students already registered, it was learned. Several hundred Jewish students from Poland and other countries who have been studying in Italian universities consequently will be unable to resume their studies in the fall session.
