Jewish music associations of Poland today protested to the management of the Philharmonic society against the engagement of the pianist Wilhelm Backhaus, who is regarded as a friend of Hitler.
Backhaus, fifty years old, was educated at Leipzig and Frank fort-Maine Conservatories. He won the Rubenstein prize in Paris in 1905 and has frequently been connected with the Manchester Royal College of Music during the last thirty years.
