The elections to the representative Jewish Assembly (Assefat Hanicharim) scheduled for next week have been postponed until December 15 by the Jewish National Council. The postponement is due to the Simpson report which is expected today and the British government’s statement on its future Palestine policy.
The Hebrew paper, Doar Hayom, claims that the elections have been postponed in order to enable the Jewish National Council to create a fait accompli regarding a parliament. In this connection the paper sharply criticizes Pinchas Rutenberg, president of the Council.
At the meeting of the Council which decided on the postponement Chaim Arlosoroff on behalf of the political commission summarized the statements made by the Council leaders to Dr. Drummond Shiels. The Council declared, he said, that it “would not accept any constitutional proposals without previous consultation and agreement with the authorized Jewish institutions. We regard a legislative council as a part of political action designed in a general political agreement and therefore demand that the government institute a round table conference of Arabs and Jews for negotiations on the program.”
