Jewish National Council for Latvia: Elections Fixed for September

Elections to the Provisional National Council of the Jews of Latvia will be held on September 11th. and 12th., the Ministry of the Interior having given its approval, and the Provisional Jewish National Council will hold its meeting on September 18th. and 19th.

Reports will be presented to the session on the position of the Jews in Latvia, the position of the Jewish social credit institutions and their further expansion, social aid, cultural work among Latvian Jewry, the position of the existing Jewish communities, the formation of new communities, election of the Central Council, and the work which it is to carry out.

The Jewish National Council will be elected for a period of three years. It has not yet been decided whether it is to consist of 50 or 75 members. The elections will be secret, equal, direct, and proportional by the Jewish population of Latvia. For the purpose of the elections, Latvia will be divided into three electoral areas. Riga and Livonia will return 34 or 23 members, according to whether the total number to be elected will be 50 or 75; Latgale 24 or 16, and Courland and Zemgale 17 or 11. All Jewish men and women who are Latvian citizens and have attained the age of 21 on the day of the polling will be eligible to vote.
