Plans for post-war absorption of new immigrants were decided upon here today at a plenary session of the Jewish National Council of Palestine. They deal chiefly with development of the educational and social services of the Council for the purpose of accommodating new Jewish settlers after the war.
Working in full cooperation with the Jewish Agency, the Council also decided to appoint a special committee to devise an employment insurance program to cope with possible post-war unemployment. The committee will be composed of representatives of organized labor and employers’ organizations.
In connection with the reopening of the recruiting offices of the Jewish Agency, it was announced today that nearly 22,000 Jewish men and women from Palestine are now serving with the British forces and an additional 6,342 are attached to various police and guard units. About 14,000 more are members of the civilian defense organization.
The Jewish National Fund announced today that six new settlements have been established in Palestine during the past six months. The settlements cover more than 18,000 dunams and have an annual total budget of about $600,000.
The General Officer Commanding the British forces in Palestine has confirmed the conviction by a military court on May 16 of Itzchak Pinkus and Mrs. Rivka Nachmias for being in possession of arms. At the same time the G.O.C. has reduced the sentence of Pinkus from eight to six years imprisonment and that of Mrs. Nachmias from twelve to six months.
