The Jewish National Fund has built two experimental dams in the Golan Heights for irrigation and flood-prevention purposes. The Kuneitra area has been subjected to floods in the winter, and agriculture in the region has been neglected for years because Syrians used the Heights primarily as a military encampment.
A Nahal–paramilitary settlement–established shortly after the Six-Day near the headquarters of the Jordan River will achieve kibbutz status next week when it affiliates with Kibbutz Artzi of the Hashomer Hatzair movement. The settlement occupies a site formerly held by the Syrian Army but on Israel’s side of the international boundary. The Jewish Agency’s agricultural department will assist the settlers until sufficient land is made cultivable to support them.
