An emergency conference of some 300 representatives of Rumanian-American Jewish and non-Jewish organizations, called to consider the anti-Semitic policy of the Rumanian Government, appealed to King Carol today to prevent acts by the present government “which might remove the name of Rumania from the roster of enlightened and humane countries of the world.”
A resolution was adopted asking King Carol “to take such steps as will prevent the enactment or enforcement, by decree or otherwise, of any law or act which shall attempt to deprive Jewish inhabitants and other minorities of any rights guaranteed to them by the Constitution.” The resolution recalled Jewish contributions to Rumania’s welfare.
The conference, held at the Hotel Astor, was called on the initiative of the United Rumanian Jews of America. The delegates represented about 60 organizations. One of the speakers was Basil Alexander, president of the non-Jewish Sons of Rumania, who said his organization had cabled an appeal to Carol similar to that of the conference.
The National Executive Committee of the American Jewish Congress will meet Jan. 30 in New York to consider a program of action in behalf of the Rumanian Jews. A member of the World Jewish Congress Executive Committee is expected to come to the United States for the meeting.
