A number of Jews who were dismissed from their jobs in the Immigration Department of the Argentine Government have been rehired, it was learned today. When they were discharged a number of the Jewish employees were told by Dr. Santiago Peralta, Director of Immigration, that they were being removed because they were Jews.
A decree has been issued by the government forbidding the appointment of foreign born persons as professors in Argentine universities. It is feared that a number of Jewish professors may be dismissed from their positions because they, like most of the Jews in the country, are immigrants.
The synagogue of the Congregacion Israelita was defaced last night by vandals who smeared tar over the walls of the building. In a complaint to the police, synagogue officials pointed out that this was the fourth such desecration of the building within recent months and asked for more efficient police protection.
