There has been no authoritative indication so far as to why Abyssinia was omitted from the Jewish expulsion decree, nor has it yet been disclosed whether foreign Jews will be allowed to remain in that new Italian colony and whether Jews expelled from other italian territories will be permitted to settle there. while reports in the foreign press in this respect must be regarded as mere speculation, it must be stressed that regulations in force permit entry to Abyssinia of foreigners without special authorization. No information has been forthcoming from the authorities so far as to the fate of capital possessions of expelled Jews.
It was learned authoritatively that acquisition of citizenship by marriage will not be considered the same as naturalization, therefore Jewish foreigners married to Italians will not be expelled.
Meanwhile, enforcement of the decree banning Jews in the Italian educational system continued. Seventeen Jewish professors, not including lecturers, were slated for dismissal from Milan University. Florence University will dismiss 45, including lecturers; Perugia, three; Turin, about 50 teachers in elementary and 20 in secondary schools. Jewish pupils who will be expelled from schools total 1,500 in Turn and 1,500 in Florence.
The Jewish mayor of Ferrera, the president of the Provincial Tax Commission, an examining magistrate and the vice-president of the fascist Council of Corporations submitted their “resignations.” Many more resignations are expected. In Trieste, a large number of Jews holding leading posts in State and party corporations and syndicates have resigned.
Forced emigration of half-Jews as a result of the Italian racial policy was predicted in informed circles. The question will be discussed by the fascist grand council at its October session and probably also by the Senate, both of which will determine the Jewish position in the professions and the status of foreigners who acquired Italian citizenship by marriage with Christian Italians.
Luigi Federzoni, president of the Italian Academy, was appointed as head of a commission to study the influence of Judaism on Italian Life since Roman antiquity. The commission’ report will be issued on nov.20 in connection with the inauguration of the new academic year.
Meanwhile, the anti-Semitic daily, IL Tevere, demanded the ousting of Jews from the armed forces, political organizations and judiciary. The weekly Roma fascista attacked prominent Jews in insurance and finance, accusing them of holding “the levers of command of Italian economy.” The press derided British comment on last week’s anti-Jewish decrees, alleging that Britain was persecuting Jewish refugees. The terms of the Intergovernmental Refugee Committee were termed a “humbugging” and “hypocritical” institution doing nothing but talking.
