On the board of directors are Max Liebermann, well-known artist; Dr. Leo Baeck, Berlin rabbi; Georg Hermann, artist; Martin Buber, former instructor of philosophy at the University of Heidelberg, and Franz Oppenheimer, former professor at Frankfurt-am-Main.
The members of the new society were forced to sign an application declaring themselves Jews. The Nazis also demanded that photographs of all members accompany their application.
The organization eventually hopes to enroll more than 10,000 Jewish members.
