THE SCHEDULED “ARYANIZATION” OF WERTHEIM’S, WORLD-FAMOUS BERLIN DEPARTMENT STORE, HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT, ACCORDING TO AN OFFICIAL NAZI ANNOUNCEMENT REPORTED IN A DISPATCH FROM BERLIN TO THE NEW YORK TIMES TODAY. THE PRINCIPAL OWNERS, GEORG WERTHEIM AND FRITZ STERNBERG, WERE EXCLUDED FROM THE MANAGEMENT WHAT WAS ANNOUNCED AS FOLLOWING “A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION OF THE CONCERN’S CAPITAL, OWNERSHIP.”
THE OWNERS DID NOT SUBMIT WITHOUT A STRUGGLE, BUT WERE FINALLY FORCED TO GIVE UP WHEN, UNDER NAZI LEADERSHIP, THE EMPLOYES DECLARED THEY COULD NOT CONTINUE WORKING IN A SHOP THAT COULD NOT SHOW THE SWASTIKA FLAG ON MAY DAY. TODAY, THE TIMES SAID, A SWASTIKA FLEW FROM THE STORE’S LONG-EMPTY FLAG STAFF.
