A call upon the United States to take the initiative in promoting direct Arab-Israel peace negotiations was issued today by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The proposal was part of a policy statement adopted by the committee during a national conference here attended by 100 Jewish leaders from 30 communities.
The committee also urged continued U.S. economic assistance to Israel and the Arabs to raise living standards; full adherence to the allowed U.S. policy to preserve the independence and integrity of the nations of the Near East; efforts to halt Soviet arms shipments to the Near East and to prevent an arms imbalance in that region; no compromise with boycott, blockade and other warlike acts; and resettlement of Arab refugees in Arab countries, with compensation from Israel for their abandoned property.
