A petition urging the Preparatory Commission for the International Refugee Organization, which is currently meeting here, to adopt a firm policy of refusing to enter into immigration agreements with nations which would permit discrimination against any minority group among the DP’s, and not to allow discrimination in the employment of DP’s in Europe was formally presented to the parley today by the American Jewish Committee.
A spokesman for the I.R.O. denied that a recent U.S. Army order to DP’s in Austria to become self-sufficient or leave the camps would mean that displaced Jews would be subject without qualification to Austrian labor laws, as have been other DP’s. He asserted that the I.R.O. would retain the power of protecting Jewish DP’s against discrimination either by Austrian fellow workers or employers. He added that only if suitable employment is available will Jewish DP’s become subject to the Army order.
