Jewish Policeman Slain in New Outburst of Arab Terrorism

A JEWISH POLICEMAN WAS SLAIN AND FOUR OTHER PERSONS WOUNDED, TWO OF THEM POLICEMEN, IN A NEW OUTBURST OF ARAB TERRORISM TODAY.

SPECIAL POLICEMAN HAIM BERGER, 24, WAS KILLED AND HIS COMPANION, S. ROSIN, SLIGHTLY WOUNDED BY ARAB BULLETS AS THEY PATROLLED THE SECTION OF TIBERIAS NEAR THE MAYOR’S HOME EARLY THIS MORNING. BERGER, A HUNGARIAN WHO ENTERED PALESTINE ILLEGALLY THREE YEARS AGO, HAD BEEN GRANTED THE STATUS OF A LEGAL IMMIGRANT TWO WEEKS AGO BY THE IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT.

ELIAHU GILADI, 37-YEAR-OLD MEMBER OF A WORKERS’ SETTLEMENT AT RAMAT RACHEL NEAR JERUSALEM, WAS SHOT AND SERIOUSLY WOUNDED WHILE EN ROUTE TO THE JERUSALEM SUBURB OF ARNONA. THE SHOOTING OCCURRED 200 FEET FROM THE ARNONA POLICE STATION WHILE TROOPS WERE MANEUVERING IN THE NEARBY HILLS. TROOPS SAW AN ARAB ESCAPING, SURROUNDED THE SPOT AND CAUGHT TWO ARABS CORRESPONDING TO A DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSAILANTS GIVEN BY GILADI.

ANTICIPATING A LONG SIEGE WITH THE TERRORISTS HE HAS BEEN SUMMONED TO QUELL, SIR CHARLES A. TEGART, FORMERLY OF THE INDIAN POLICE, TODAY ORDERED 1,500 BULLET-PROOF LIGHT-WEIGHT STEEL JACKETS FOR PALESTINE POLICEMEN, THE HAVAS NEWS AGENCY REPORTED.

A BRITISH CONSTABLE WAS SLIGHTLY WOUNDED IN AN EXCHANGE OF SHOTS WITH ARAB TERRORISTS WHO TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO ASSASSINATE TEWFIK BEY KHALIL, LEADER OF A GROUP OPPOSING THE FUGITIVE MUFTI OF JERUSALEM, BY SHOOTING INTO KHALIL’S HOME IN HAIFA.

AN ARAB WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED IN THE EXPLOSION OF A LAND MINE IN THE VILLAGE OF DEIRKAHI. TELEPHONE LINES LINKING HEBRON AND JERUSALEM WERE CUT, THE ROAD BARRICADED AND A PASSING CAR FIRED ON. NO CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED. FOUR ARABS FIRED SHOTS AT A PATROL GUARDING THE DETENTION CAMPS NEAR SARAFEND.

THE CRIMINAL ASSIZE COURTS SENTENCED TWO ARABS TO DEATH FOR THE SLAYING LAST FEBRUARY OF A JEW, MENDEL MINZ, ON THE NATHANIA-TEL AVIV ROAD.

THE JERUSALEM MILITARY COURT WILL PASS JUDGMENT, FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE ITS CREATION NOV. 18, ON A WOMAN WHEN ZAHRAH BASSAL, AN ARAB, GOES ON TRIAL WEDNESDAY WITH HER HUSBAND ON CHARGES OF POSSESSING A LARGE QUANTITY OF EXPLOSIVES.
