The executive committee of the International Refugee Organization, which ended its session here last night, decided to reconsider the question of sponsoring the immigration of displaced persons to Palestine at a special meeting to be held on Jan. 23. The number of Jewish displaced persons remaining in Italy continues to decline weekly, as the number of Israel-bound immigrants reaches new heights. In November a total of 11,000 Jews left Italy for the Jewish state. At present there are 2,500 Jewish DP’s living in I.R.O. centers and 3,000 who reside outside the camps. Of this total, it is estimated, 80 percent will proceed to the Jewish state within the next two months while the remainder will be eligible for admission to the United States. Only some 800 DP’s–most of them aged and ill–are expected to remain in Italy.
Five ambulances were shipped to Israel today from Naples for the use of the Red Mogen David. The ambulances are the second such contribution made by the Italian Jewish community.
