The recently announced government order confiscating thirty percent of all “German-owned property” in Brazil as indemnity for a Brazilian vessel sunk by a Nazi U-boat, is arousing much concern among German-Jewish refugees here.
The order applies to all property owned by “German subjects,” without differentiating between nationals of Germany who adhere to the Nazi regime and are here for business or diplomatic reasons, and persons who have fled from Germany and sought a haven in Brazil. As a result, Jewish refugees from the Reich will have their property confiscated to pay for the damages inflicted by the German navy, unless the order is amended.
