Jewish refugees in Uruguay, Chile, Peru and Belivia have made important contributions to the economy of these countries and have adjusted themselves to the social and economic life of the nations, Gertrude Pinsky, representative of the Joint Distribution Committee, told a press conference.
Miss Pinsky, who has just returned from a visit to the Jewish communities in Uruguay, Chile, Peru and Bolivia, said that with the assistance of the JDC they are beginning to become more self-reliant and are assuming responsibility for local social welfare work and furnishing increasing support to campaigns for relief abroad.
Jacob Ligheman, who heads the South American office of the JDC, said that a program of relief and reconstruction aid through local groups and a drive for funds for overseas programs are in full swing in the South American Jewish communities.
