Four hundred and nine Jewish refugees left for ##ifa from Marseille Sunday on the HIAS-chartered vessel Providence, Isaac L. Asof##y, executive director of the organization announced here today. All but twelve ##f the 318 adults and 91 children were DP’s in the British zone of Germany and are ##e first group to be admitted to Palestine under a British plan to divide the Jewish ##migration quota between Cyprus internees and DP’s in the British zone.Asofsky also disclosed that special representatives of HIAS are now in Sao ##ulo, Brazil, negotiating with Brazilian Immigration Commissioner Pericles Mello de ##arvalho for the admission of Jewish refugees on a basis of full equality. The HIAS ##voys have requested that their organization be permitted to select Jewish immi##rants to Brazil with emphasis on mechanics, artisans and profeusionals and that the ##IAS and the Brazilian Jewish community be permitted to assume corporate responsibili##y for a definite number of immigrants.
