Some 300 Jewish refugees trapped in besieged shanghai will be flown to Canada, with the approval of the Canadian Government, in an emergency evacuation project sponsored by the Joint Distribution committee, the International Refugee Organization and the Canadian Jewish Congress, it was reported here today.
The air evacuation from Shanghai, called “Operation Flying Dragon,” will be carried out by five planes chartered by J.D.C. and I.R.O The first plane is expected to land in Vancouver on Saturday, J.D.C. officials here declared.
Approximately 250 of the evacuees are repatriates bound for their native Austria, while some 50 will remain in Canada. Permission for the repatriates to enter Canada and remain six months pending travel arrangements was received from the Dominion Government by the Canadian Jewish Congress which collaborates closely with J.D.C. on overseas assistance programs. The refugees will be housed temporarily in the Jewish Community Center of Vancouver upon their arrival there.
Advices received by the Joint Distribution Committee in New York from A.C. Glessgold, its director in Shanghai, disclosed that following the completion of “operation Plying Dragon” there will still be 1,500 Jewish refugees in Shanghai.
