Jewish relief organizations today reached an agreement with the British occupation authorities on extending aid to the Exodus Jews, after defying a British ultimatum either to cooperate unconditionally with them in the refugees’ disembarkation or “also leave the British zone of Germany.”
The Jewish agencies, together with the International Relief Organization, will provide medical assistance during the first few weeks of the refugees’ internment in the camps. They will extend material aid only after clarification of the status of the Jews. The agencies which participated in the conference with the British are the (##)int Distribution Committee, the Jewish Agency and the British Jewish Relief Organization.
The agreement is interpreted here as a victory for the Jews since it represents the position adopted by the Jewish groups, as well as the I.R.O., earlier in the controversy. The ultimatum, which was revealed by Joseph Rosensaft, chairman of the Central Committee of Liberated Jews, expired at 2 P.M. this afternoon.
