For the first time since the Republic of Turkey was established after the first World War, Jewish schools will this year teach Jewish religion and history. During the intervening years no Jewish religious and traditional instruction was available to Turkish Jews.
Previously, religious instruction was forbidden in all schools, but the present regime has authorized the teaching of religion in public schools as well as in educational institutions supported by minority communities. Some 5,000 Jewish students will be enrolled in the Jewish schools this year, it was estimated here.
