Bloom’s, a famous Jewish restaurant in London’s East End was awarded substantial damages by the High Court in its libel suit against author Frank Norman and the publishers of his book “One of our Own.” The size of the monetary award was not disclosed, Norman and his publisher, Hodder and Stoughton, agreed to withdraw the book and destroy all remaining copies.
The restaurant claimed it was libeled by reference in the book to a fictitious East End restaurant called “Bluma’s” which the author accused of violating wartime food rationing laws, and which, he implied, served non-kosher meats labeled kosher, The real Bloom’s is well known to Londoners and tourists for its corned beef and Vienna sausages.
