Jewish ritual slaughter of bulls was allowed to resume in the Netherlands. Dutch officials had halted the practice, claiming it caused unnecessary suffering, and drew up a proposal that would have restricted the Jewish community’s freedom to choose which types of cattle to slaughter. The proposal was quashed, however, after Jewish leaders met last week with the Dutch agriculture minister and argued that the proposal was more restrictive than that in any other E.U. country.
