Prof. Hendrik Samuel Houtakker of Harvard University was this week awarded an honorary doctorate in economics at the Amsterdam University, of which he is an alumnus, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Amsterdam Faculty of Economics. Prof. Houtakker, the son of a famous Dutch Jewish art dealer, settled in the United States in the early 1950’s. He was a member of President Nixon’s three-man Advisory Economic Committee.
The ceremony had to be postponed at the very last minute and took place later in one of the campus administration buildings, as 100 students occupied the auditorium shouting slogans against Nixon. The students also protested against a decision of the Dutch Minister for Higher Education, Maurits Debrauw, to introduce cuts in the university’s budget.
