Jewish scholars will play a prominent role in the publication of a projected six-volume 3,000,000-word “History of Mankind” in which a thousand scholars will participate.
The project, which is being sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, will be in the hands of an International Commission for a Scientific and Cultural History of Mankind. The division of the work into six volumes recognizes six main phases of the development of mankind. These phases are marked by the formation of particular groupings of peoples, definite geographical centers of economic and political organization, special intellectual, religious and artistic trends, and distinctive means and lines of communication among peoples.
Among the corresponding members of the Commission are: Prof. Shimon Bodenheimer, zoologist and historian of science of Hebrew University: Prof. C. Levi-Strauss, anthropologist and linguist of Sorbonne; Dr. Charles Singer of London, historian of medicine technology. Dr. Louis Gottschalk, professor of European history at the University of Chicago, was named to write Volume IV of the series covering the period from A.D. 1300 to the opening of the nineteenth century. Prof. Henri Frankfort, director of the Warburg Institute in London, archaeologist and historian, will write the section of Volume I dealing with ancient history.
