The South African Board of Jewish Education named today a commission to study the financing of Jewish education. Judge Simon Kuper was named chairman.
The appointment of the new commission followed publication of a report recommending that no new Jewish communal projects be undertaken in Cape province until the existing Jewish day schools in the province were made financially secure. The interim report was made by the Herbstein Commission which examined the Jewish educational structure in the province to formulate plans to meet capital and current operating deficits.
The report of the commission, which was headed by Capetown Judge Joseph Bernstein, was released Jointly by the Cape Board of Jewish Education, the Western Province Zionist Council and the Cape Council of Deputies. The report also urged that top priority be given to Hebrew education in Jewish communal planning as well as a special campaign for funds to reduce the indebtedness of the Herzlia Jewish day schools in Capetown.
