Jewish Section of Interfaith Aid-britain Body is Formed

Formal establishment of the Jewish Section of the Interfaith Committee for Aid to the Democracies, for the purpose of rendering aid to Great Britain was announced today. Dr. Israel Goldstein has been elected chairman of the committee.

The Jewish Section, Dr. Goldstein said, will undertake as its immediate task to fulfilling of a pledge to secure 200 mobile field kitchens for the British population, at a cost of approximately $400,000. The organization has already turned over $75,000 to the British War Relief Society, in whose offices it is headquartered. It is proposed to establish in key communities throughout the United States.

Meanwhile, more than 1,000 delegates of Jewish organizations in the metropolitan area voted at a conference at the Hotel Edison to support the American Jewish Congress in its program for the post-war reconstruction of Jewish life in Europe, to be formulated through a Research Institute which has been established in the City of New York. The conference also voted to establish a permanent organization of fraternal bodies to be known as the Metropolitan Council of the American Jewish Congress. Edward S. Silver was elected chairman.

Announcement of the institute was made by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the congress, while its program was developed in the first public address in this country by the director of the institute, Dr. Jacob Robinson, formerly of Kaunas, Lithuania.

The first all-American Jewish conference in history is to be held in July, 1941, in Montevideo, Uruguay, Dr. Wise stated. This meeting of representatives of Jewish communities in the 22 Countries of North and South America will have a three-fold purpose, Dr. Wise said: “to strengthen the bond inherent in the American way of life; to unite all Jews throughout the world; and to mobilize support for a Jewish Commonwealth of Palestine after the war.”
