For the fourth American wartime Christmas, Jewish service men and women at military and naval establishments throughout the United States and at overseas posts wherever feasible are relinquishing passes and furloughs extending over the holiday season and are volunteering as well for extra duty to permit more of their Christian comrades to celebrate the holiday as fully as possible, the Jewish Welfare Board reported today. This annual goodwill gesture is being carried out on a broader scale than ever, according to reports from camps and naval bases coming to the offices of the Welfare Board.
The JWB announced at the same time that Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein and Chaplain Aryeh Lev are en route to the Pacific war fronts to survey the religious needs of Jewish servicemen. Rabbi Bernstein is executive director of the JWB’s Committee on Army and Navy Religious Activities, and Chaplain Lev, serving as military aide on this tour, is attached to the Office of the Chief of Chaplains in Washington.
