Rosa Raisa, well-known Jewish opera singer, once of Bialystok, Poland, who is singing this week in the Berlin Opera House, has been highly praised by the German newspapers. Even the ferociously anti-Semitic Nazi papers, the Voelkischer Beobachter and Der Angriff, edited by Paul Joseph Goebbels, have joined in the chorus of praise for the Jewish opera singer. Madam Raisa is appearing in Berlin as a member of an Italian troupe.
However, despite the praise that is being lavished upon Madam Raisa, not a single German paper has found it necessary to inform its readers that the much-praised opera singer is a Jewess. The impression is given that she is Italian.
Madam Raisa is well known in the United States, having been a member of the Chicago Civic Opera Company for many years, and having made many concert tours of the country.
At the same time that Madam Raisa is arousing the admiration of the Hitlerites, Sylvia Sidney, New York Jewish screen star, is enjoying a tremendous popularity in the cinemas of Berlin. Six movie houses are featuring films in which she plays the star roles. They are meeting with the greatest success, surpassing that of any German-made films.
