Thirty-seven Jewish Socialists, who fell in the recent fighting, are buried in the Vienna Jewish cemetery, reports received here from Vienna state. The number of Jewish Socialist dead who were buried in non-Jewish cemeteries is not known. The Christian Socialist leaders, particularly Dr. Emmerich Crermak, president of the party. declared that Jewish Socialists did not participate in the fighting and that Jewish Socialist leaders fled from the country rather than fight. Dr. Czermak made this statement at a conference of the party in Vienna immediately after the crushing of the Socialist uprising.
While the fight was raging in Austria, leaders of the government forces, including Chancelior Dollfuss, Vice Chancellor Emil Fey and Prince von Starhemberg, repeatedly declared over the government-owned radio system that the Jewish leaders of the Austrian Socialists fled from the country “in luxurious automobiles with their pockets full of money.”
Later it was proven that Dr. Julius Deutsch, commander of the Socialist forces and Dr. Otto Bauer, Jewish leaders of the Socialists remained in the fighting line until the revolt was crushed. They escaped to Czechoslovakia.
