More than 400 Jewish soldiers of the American, British, Polish and South African armies, together with troops of the Jewish Brigade, attended special Rosh Hashonah services arranged by the U.S. Army in the Quirono Theatre.
British Chaplain Myer Berman and U.S. chaplain Robert Katz officiated. A letter from Brig. Gen. Theoburn K. Brown, who was present at last year’s services here, was read. Gen. Brown said that he knew “of no group that has suffered such indignities at the hands of the Germans in the overrun countries of Central Europe, and therefore no group who have gained more by victory of the Allies,” than the Jews.
Local Ashkenazic and Sephardic synagogues were crowded with men, women and even babies. The atmosphere was one of festivity and rejoicing.
