Dr. Ellen Hellmann, well-known South African sociologist and a leading figure in the Jewish community, has been named recipient of the Royal African Society Medal in recognition of her work among the African people. The award was presented to her by Sir Arthur Snelling, the British Ambassador to South Africa. A former president of the South African Institute of Race Relations, Dr. Hellmann also has played an active part for many years in the work of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies and in South African Zionism.
