An Israeli spokesman revealed here today that the Jewish state will apply for early membership in the United Nations. The formal application will be filed soon with the U.N. Secretariat, possibly in time for consideration by the Security Council “before it adjourns its Lake Success sessions on August 21.
Under the rules of procedure, an application for membership is subject to approval by two-thirds of the U.N. General Assembly, but only after having it has obtained a majority of at least seven votes in the 11-nation Security Council.
