Extending Rosh Hashanah greetings to the Jewish community in the United States “in the name of the Government and the people of Israel,” Israeli representative to the United States Eliahu Epstein declared in a New Year’s message released here today that “Israel lives–the culmination of the hopes and prayers of 1,900 years, brought to life with the blood, the strength and the treasure of the people of Israel.
“The history of our people is long and honorable,” Mr. Epstein declared. “Our traditions are ancient. For us the past year will shine like a beacon in the darkness. We have sought and we have found the road to liberation and to peace.
“That our problems are not ended is all too plain. Ahead lies the challenge of a tremendous responsibility for our brethren still in the camps. There is the great issue of restoration of places damaged and destroyed by the enemy. Enormous and costly problems of redemption of deserts and hills to prepare them for large-scale development and colonization await a speedy and constructive solution.
“We face the future with the knowledge that behind us, morally, spiritually and materially, stands American Jewry, united and determined to extend a helping hand to the new democracy. May great achievement through sympathetic cooperation with Jews everywhere, based on our ancient ideal and heritage, be the fruits of our common endeavor,” the message said.
