Jewish students at Dalhousie University here demonstrated this week-end against the Canadian Government’s decision to release for shipment to Egypt 12 Harvard trainer planes while refusing to clear a small ammunition order to Israel. The students picketed peacefully on the dock where a Dutch freighter will load the planes.
In Ottawa, meanwhile, Lester B Pearson, Canada’s Minister for External Affairs, explained his government’s exemption of the trainer planes from the general embargo on arms shipments to the Middle East by the assertion that unarmed planes would not upset any balance of strength between the Arab states and Israel. Mr. Pearson further stated that he did not believe that either party was willing to provoke a full-scale war in the Middle East. “War would be disastrous to all concerned,” he said.
