Leaders of the Central Council of Jews in Germany and of the Association of Concentration Camp Survivors protested today against attempts to disturb the graves of Nazi victims in Germany.
Joseph Rosensaft of the Association and Dr. Henryk van Dan, secretary of the Council, charged that unknown, unauthorized rabbis had apparently given permission for the re-opening of the graves and the transfer to France of the remains of French nationals. They asserted that the Jewish authorities had never been consulted by any rabbinical authorities.
Further, they charged that the proposed transfer was in bad taste and impracticable since it would be impossible to establish the identity of individuals buried in mass graves. It was stated that opening the graves would cause distress to relatives of the deceased and to all survivors of the camps. The World Jewish Congress has been asked to intervene.
