The principal factor in the achievement of the historic pact on reparations and restitutions from West Germany was the Jewish unity achieved for this particular endeavor, Dr. Nahum Goldmann declared here today. He also indicated there might be additional claims from new categories of victims of the Nazi period whose claims have been unheeded until now.
Dr. Goldmann spoke at a reception given by the Jewish Trust Corporation to mark the publication of Dr. C. Kapralik’s new book, “Reclaiming the Nazi Loot.” The book is a summary of the work of the Corporation, which was set up under restitution laws in the British zone of occupied Germany and Berlin, to represent organizations with claims against Germany in the British sector.
Sir Henry D’Avigdor Goldsmid, Corporation chairman, said that the approximately 13,000,000 pounds sterling ($36,400,000) recovered by the Corporation from West Germany had been used by four organizations–the Jewish Agency, the Joint Distribution Committee, the Central British Fund and the Leo Baeck Trust. He reported that toward the end of the fund distribution, it was found that some of the money could be allocated to Hebrew University and for some religious purposes in Israel.
