A check for $30,000, the first of six checks of the same amount, was presented here yesterday to Henry Morgenthau Jr., Secretary of the Treasury, in behalf of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States, for the purchase of a pursuit plane for the American air force, it was announced here today.
In presenting the check, Benjamin Kaufman, national commander of the Jewish War Veterans, stated that the organization which he represents has pledged itself to raise funds for the purchase of six pursuit planes for the Government. He expressed the hope that other organizations may be inspired to do the same. Secretary Morgenthau, in responding, declared that “the spirit shown by the Jewish War Veterans in sponsoring the drive for $180,000 has set an example which the rest of America might well follow. Spirits such as this made America great and will keep America strong. The Jewish War Veterans have set a precedent which assures victory.”
