Jewish welfare leaders from six states will gather here Oct. 10 and 11 at the East Central States Regional Conference of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds to discuss welfare activities in war-time.
“The two-day conference is expected to be in the nature of a stock-taking of the Jewish community in war time,” Jerome N. Curtis, chairman of the East Central States Region, declared today. “It should provide a comprehensive picture of what is happening to the Jewish community locally and nationally during a war period. Material will be presented analyzing the changes now taking place on the economic and religious fronts of Jewish communal life and relating this to the total American scene. Discussions on the effect of the war on communal planning for welfare work will cover the fields of family and individual welfare, Jewish education, civic protective work, coordination of social services and other fields where notable changes have occurred. Consideration will be given to planning a year-round program of interpretation and education for welfare fund campaigns. Coordination and administration of welfare services through a central body will also be discussed.”
The large-city section will be under the direction of Eugene Friedheim, vice-president of the Jewish Social Service Bureau and Philip Bernstein, both of Cleveland. Discussion leaders will be Abraham Srere, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit, Alfred J. Wilner of the Pittsburgh Federation of Jewish Philanthropies and James H. Miller, president of the Euclid Avenue Temple and Budget Chairman of the Bureau of Jewish Education of Cleveland. Sam Mueller, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Indianapolis, will be chairman of the meeting. The smaller-cities section will be under the direction of Walton Strauss and Ben Wolfe, president and executive, respectively, of the Jewish Community Council of Erie. Discussion leaders will be Mrs. Edgar Warner, president, Jewish Welfare Society of Erie, and Dr. Nathan Salon, Budget Chairman of the Fort Wayne Jewish Federation.
Isidore Sobeloff, executive director of the Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation and Gustave Kann, president of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Pittsburgh will discuss community financing and war chests at the closing session, which will terminate the conference.
