Raisa Azarkh, a Jewish woman veteran of three wars who has been twice decorated by the Russian Government is lauded in the press today for her work with the Red Army.
Miss Azarkh won the Order of the Red Banner back in 1918 when she was regimental commissar of a cavalry detachment which defeated the White Guard troops on the Eastern front. In 1937 she received the Order of the Red Star for a special assignment entrusted to her by the government. This Jewish woman, who is also a noted author, also saw service in the Spanish Civil War, when, together with volunteers from all over the world, she fought with the Loyalist army against Franco. In 1940 she participated in the war against Finland. Since the outbreak of the present war she has been on duty on the Southwestern front.
