The pulpit of the local Jewish congregation was occupied by a woman for the first time in its history, when Mrs. Estelle M. Sternberger of New York City, Executive Secretary of the National Council of Jewish Women, delivered an address before the local community, under the auspices of the Newport News Section of the Council.
