The first World Conference of Jewish Youth will be held in Israel from July 28 to August 1, it was announced here today by the Youth and Hechalutz Department of the Jewish Agency, sponsor of the project.
Over 350 delegates from 42 countries, including 74 from the United States and Canada, will participate in the gathering which is designed to serve as a forum for the interchange of ideas and for the discussion of problems common to Jewish youth organizations throughout the world. On the agenda will be such topics as the status of Jewish youth in the world: deepening of Jewish content in youth programs dissemination of Hebrew language and literature; and relations between Israel and Jewish youth throughout the world.
The delegates, who will be between 18 and 25 years of age, have been appointed as representatives by their local Jewish youth organizations and are expected to spend a total of four weeks in Israel. In addition to the conference, they will attend a three-day youth festival which will bring together some 2,500 members of the various Israel summer institutes and workshops for youth from abroad, sponsored by the Jewish Agency, and some 2,000 young Israelis.
All countries outside the Iron Curtain will be represented at the World Conference of Jewish Youth, including representatives from India, Iran, Singapore, New Zealand, Rhodesia and the Belgian Congo. Delegates from the United States will include representatives of the Zionist youth movements, the National Jewish Welfare Board, the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization and the Hillel Foundations, the United Synagogue Youth, the National Federation of Temple Youth, and Yeshiva University Youth Council.
