Hundreds of daring Jewish youths are fighting in the ranks of the Lithuanian divisions of the Russian Army and many of them have been decorated for heroism and distinguished service, it is reported here today.
Among those recently awarded citations are Sgt. Yankelevich, who received the Order of the Red Star for holding a position in face of determined enemy attacks, although twice wounded; Lieut. Mekhlis, who crept into the Nazi lines and mined the area between two German battalions facilitating the capture of both units by the Red Army; nurse Bluma Feigin who carried 62 wounded soldiers from the battle field; and nurse Fanny Shalit who took the place of a dead machine gunner.
