A Jew was appointed Mayor of Curitiba, capital of Brazil’s southern state of Parana and two Jews were named members of the new government of the state of Sao Paulo, it was reported here. The Mayor of Curitiba is Dr. Saul Raiz whose appointment was announced by the Governor of Parana. The Jewish community in Curitiba, founded 70 years ago, numbers fewer than 400 families, Dr. Raiz, who has been active in Jewish communal affairs, succeeded the former Mayor, Dr, Chaim Lerner, who was also Jewish.
The two new members of the Sao Paulo government are Dr. Jose Ephim Mindlin, Secretary for Culture and Education and Prof. Georges Wilhelm, Planning Secretary. Dr. Mindlin was active in the Jewish community for many years and served as president of the Community of Central European Jews in Sao Paulo.
