Czecho-Slovakian Jewry has been tremendously aroused by reports in the leading Prague papers that it was the Jews who attacked the Greeks in Saloniki instead of the other way around. Ceske Slovo, the organ of Eduard Benes, foreign minister, and the Prager Presse, semi-official spokesman for the foreign office, are the papers that published the offending reports.
Under the headline “Jews Make a Pogrom Upon Christians,” the Ceske Slovo declared that “in the Jewish suburb of Solun there occurred last night a clash between Jews and Christians. There were about twenty injured on both sides. Governor Gonatas of Macedonia declares that the conflict was caused by Jews and that most of the injured are Christians.”
In similar vein the Prager Presse reported that “Jews in the Kalmaria quarter attacked a soldier who was forced to call for aid from his colleagues. In the Wardwar quarters Jews fired upon a detachment of soldiers who were marching through the streets and a clash ensued. Among the wooden houses of the Campbell quarter, which are inhabited by about a hundred families, several were destroyved by fire.”
